Didsbury Point Residential
South Manchester, U.K.
| Didsbury Point is a new development on the former Withington Hospital site in South Manchester. Countryside Properties plc commissioned Studio Engleback in 2002 to work on the masterplan with MBLC and then EDAW with Taylor Young. This was followed site enabling work, including soil harvesting, tree and botanic reports, the design of a central garden square that would give the site an immediate ‘address’, a business park and the first phase of housing. The residential design was undertaken by architects Calder Peel and delivered on site during 2004. | At this time, car parking was still a dominant planning requirement, accommodated in car parking courts, but the heart of the first phase was car free and planted as a lush herbaceous perennial garden in ‘warm colours’ with use of climbing plants on garden walls and light foliage birch trees above to create a more intimate residential environment. Light grey granite aggregate paving has been used in flag and sett form for the parking courts |
